Welcome to my bilingual blog about reading. My name is Nicolas Barakat and I’m an elementary school teacher. I have loved books ever since I learned to read as a precocious four year old, a bit more than three decades ago. Since the pandemic, my reading habits have skyrocketed. Before that time, I was reading maybe ten to fifteen books per year, and now I’m on pace to reach almost eighty this year. The number itself isn’t the interesting part to me – although I do love statistics! – it’s how I have decided to make reading my principal hobby and cut down on almost every other one, namely browsing around idly on the Internet.

This blog is mostly a personal project. Many people around me have told me I should try to talk about my interests on a public platform, either a vlog, a blog or a podcast. I know nothing about editing video and/or audio files and I’m way more comfortable writing than I am in front of the camera. However, I’m not against trying something new in the future. Time will tell.

I decided to name it “I read many things” because that’s actually what I do. Not the number of books per se, but rather the variety of books I like to read, especially non-fiction ones. I love to learn about anything and everything, and no subject is boring when you take time to get to know it. I have favourites, obviously, but I like to keep an open mind.

I have decided to try and write a bilingual blog. French is my main language and is the one I use in 98% of my daily life, but most of my hobbies are in English. I also know that doing almost anything in English increases its visibility, as it’s the world’s most spoken second language. As it’s not my mother tongue, it’s still possible that grammatical errors slip in or that some sentences have a slightly weird structure. If that happens, don’t hesitate to gently correct me. Same thing for articles written in French. I’m not immune to mistakes either!

I’ll write in English or French depending on what comes naturally to me at the time. The majority of what I read is in English, but I may be more comfortable writing about that subject in French.

Bonjour!

Bienvenue à mon blog bilingue de lecture. Mon nom est Nicolas Barakat et je suis un enseignant au niveau primaire. J’ai toujours aimé la lecture depuis que j’ai appris à lire à l’âge relativement précoce de quatre ans, il y a plus de trois décennies. Depuis la pandémie, mes habitudes de lecture ont augmenté considérablement. Avant, je lisais environ dix à quinze livres par an et cette année je vais m’approcher de quatre-vingt. Le nombre n’est pas vraiment ce qui m’intéresse – bien que je sois un grand amateur de statistiques – c’est plutôt ma décision de faire de la lecture mon loisir principal et de diminuer la part des autres, notamment perdre mon temps sur Internet.

Ce blog est un projet personnel. Plusieurs personnes dans mon entourage m’ont mentionné que je devrais partager publiquement certains de mes intérêts, soit en blog, en vlog ou en podcast. Je ne connais absolument rien à l’édition audio et/ou vidéo, alors que je suis plutôt à l’aise pour écrire. Cependant, je n’ai rien contre l’idée d’explorer ces avenues dans le future. On ne sait jamais!

J’ai choisi le nom “I read many things” (Je lis plein de trucs) parce que c’est exactement ce que je fais. Pas nécessairement en quantité, mais plutôt en variété, surtout pour ce qui est de la non-fiction. J’adore apprendre sur n’importe quel sujet et aucun d’entre eux n’est ennuyant si on s’y arrête un peu. J’ai bien évidemment des domaines favoris, mais je cherche à garder un esprit ouvert.

J’ai décidé de faire un blog bilingue. Le français est ma langue principale est celle que j’utilise dans 98% des mes interactions au quotidien, mais la majorité de mes hobbies sont en anglais. Je sais aussi que d’entreprendre quoique ce soit en anglais rend le tout plus visible, puisque c’est la langue seconde la plus répandue dans le monde. Évidemment, puisque l’anglais n’est pas ma langue maternelle, il n’est pas impossible que je commette quelques erreurs ou alors que mes phrases soient drôlement construites. Si ça arrive, n’hésitez pas à me corriger gentiment. Pareillement pour les écrits en français, je ne suis pas à l’abri des erreurs!

Je vais écrire en français ou en anglais selon ce qui me vient le plus naturellement au moment d’écrire. Bien que je lise la majorité des mes livres en anglais, il y a plusieurs sujets avec lesquels je suis confortable en français.
